Dewey began as Cherry Siding, a train stop for drop-off of goods for the town of Cherry. Darrel Duppa ran a Black Canyon Stage station there and operated a post office, which he called Agua Fria. The post office discontinued in 1895. When it re-opened in 1898, the government required a new name. Residents chose Dewey, either for Rear Admiral Dewey or a local pioneer.
Stanton's Grocery and other businesses opened near the corner of Highway 69 and 169. A fire around the turn of the 20th century burned three saloons, a boarding house and a large hotel.
The railroad moved the depot away (to Skull Valley) in 1926. In the Great Depression, Dewey joined the Yarber School District to save tax dollars, but later became part of the Humboldt district. The state paved the main road from Phoenix to Prescott in 1953, and the center of Dewey moved to its current location.
