First called Val Verde in 1879, residents named their post office for Baron Aleander von Humboldt, naturalist, in 1905. Humboldt Smelting Co. had the town officially surveyed in 1906. That same year, a businnessman built The Artic Ice House, later to be Humboldt School after the regular schoolhouse mysteriously burned in1932.
Smelting ceased in the mid 1930's the town dwindled from its 1907 population of about 1,000 to 300.
The current elementary school opened in 1953. Iron King Mine, a major employer closed in 1967.
