Joel Mayer opened a store, saloon and stage stop on the plain east of Prescott in 1881, forming the nucleus for expanding mining and agricultural concerns in the area. Today, the town of Mayer exists as an unincorporated collection of homes and businesses under the purview of the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors.
The Mayer Justice Court and a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office sub-station, as well as the United States Post Office, are the primary government installations.
Nearly 800 students from Poland Junction to Cordes Junction attend Mayer schools (the Mayer Junior-
Senior High School is actually located in Spring Valley).
Roads from Mayer into the Prescott National Forest are a popular jumping-off point for day-trippers and campers seeking to explore the pine forest and historic mining towns such as Crown King. Mayer Daze, on the first Saturday in June, is the town's biggest annual event, featuring a parade and barbecue.
